We had six people join us at the banding station today for a new volunteer orientation and training session. We were able to show everybody the net setup, banding equipment and methods, and give an introduction on how to extract birds from mistnets.
Back: Marc Kramer, Michelle Davis, Celeste De Palma, Ian Jarrett, Sandy Milledge
Front: Martina Hillbrand, Vera Jarrett, Eliana Ardila
This young lady was the star of the morning; a first year female Yellow-throated warbler. The birds cooperated with us today and we banded 22 new of 9 species and recaptured a resident Northern Cardinal banded in a previous season.
The Yellow-throated warbler was captured in a net sponsored by our most recent Adopt-A-Net donor, an old friend and ally of the Cape Florida Banding Station.
“David La Puma of woodcreeper.com is proud to support the 2013 Cape Florida Banding Station. May the little blue and green dots on the radar translate to many birds in these nets, and in turn may we reach new heights in our understanding of bird migration through Florida and beyond.”
The SFBO would love to thank David and all of our other Adopt-A-Net sponsors, especially as our scale died today due to exposure to the constant humidity.
There will be a second volunteer orientation and training session on Saturday Sept 7 from 0830 until around 1230. Please contact Michelle Davis at vireoojorojo@hotmail.com if you are interested in participating.

So glad to be a ‘part’ of the banding station, even from 1000+ miles away 😉 Can’t wait to see you and the 2013 banding crew in October. BRING.IT.ON!!!
