Why they call it ‘Flipping the Bird’

This young female Prairie warbler probably had an encounter with a predator that left her with only one remaining tail feather. The replacement feathers are growing in all around it to make this interesting tail shape. Or perhaps her great grandfather is a Long-tailed jaeger!

East winds across the state seemed to drive last night’s migrants to the west and away from Cape Florida. As a result the number of captures today was half of what it was the last couple of days. The weather has also been dry lately, and overnight rain has proven to be important in creating concentrations of migrants at the Cape. When the weather is nice and birds are in good condition they will just keep on going and overfly our location. This phenomenon has been labeled as ‘migration sucks’ by a prominent local birder.
