Thirteen people showed up for the second banding orientation and training session today. The small showers coming in from the ocean managed to bloom up into a huge thunderstorm over Miami right at the time everybody was showing up at the station.
We set a new record for number of people in the banding tent at one time: there are 17 of us in there. Robin Diaz is discussing migration through Cape Florida while everyone leans in to avoid getting too wet.
The rain slowed down and eventually stopped so we opened nets again at 1000 and managed to band 20 birds of 6 species by 1300. This Prothonotary warbler was the star, but all the birds were appreciated. Captured today:
Ovenbird: 9
Worm-eating warbler: 6
Northern waterthrush: 2
Prothonotary warbler: 1
Black & white warbler: 1
Black-throated blue warbler: 1
recapture: one Ovenbird
