The crew today had to dodge thunderstorms in the morning but were able to open just a little bit later than usual. Among the captures was our second returning Ovenbird. Both were banded in 2019.
The bird of the day was this young male Red-bellied woodpecker who was only happy when he was chewing on somebody’s hand. We know he is a male because of the extent of red on his crown (the female has a tan cap) and we know he is a young bird because his eye is still brown (adults have ruby red eyes) and the molt limits in the wings.
