Banding underway for 2014

We opened our nets today for the first day of the Fall 2014 banding season. It was hot, quiet and VERY buggy. Everglades-style mosquitos! We were rewarded for our persistence with two American redstarts and one Louisiana waterthrush.

August is generally a pretty slow month for migrants in South Florida, but the trickle is starting. Louisiana waterthrush is one of several species that have such an early migration that they have already passed through our area by the end of August. The similar Northern waterthrush will become much more common in the weeks to follow.

  1. I don’t know if you can help….but I was wondering what kind of bird was in my backyard in Sunrise.  They were perched on 2 separate mornings and I would imagine they are migrating somewhere but I don’t seem to be able to find out what kind of bird it is.

Thank you in advance for any help.
