To band a mockingbird

All photos by Kristen Brush

I was wrong about migration being a complete nothing-burger until the weekend. Radar showed a lot of birds on the move in Georgia and northern Florida, so something should end up down here this week despite the winds. Sure enough, the numbers of birds banded today perked up a little. The migrants were our commonly captured species, but a local species provided entertainment as we banded our first Northern mockingbird of the season. This is a species it seems we should catch more of, but they aren’t as abundant onsite as the Northern cardinals and all the locals learn where the nets are. Except for two banded resident cardinals today; everybody makes mistakes sometimes.
