Birds are back!

The Miami radar is back online after being struck by lightning a couple of weeks ago, and to our delight it showed some birds moving down the peninsula last night. Today we were treated to the second-busiest day so far this fall, with 32 new captures and 2 recaps, all warblers. American redstarts are closing in on Black & white warblers for top species captured to date, but the first of our most abundant species overall arrived today, a very good-looking female Black-throated blue warbler. She had a strong wash of blue on the wings and tail even though she was a hatching-year bird. We usually see this coloring in the adult females, but there is a lot of variation among individuals.

The weirdest capture today was this Cuban night anole in Net 16. It is an exotic species escaped from the pet trade and they are all over South Florida.
